Duck Shit Dancong (Ya Shi Xiang) is one of the most famous and, at the same time, most bizarrely named oolong teas in the world. It comes from the misty Phoenix Mountains (Fenghuang Shan) in the South Chinese province of Guangdong. Despite its unusual name, which translates to "Duck Shit Aroma," it is an absolutely noble top-tier tea. The name dates back to a clever tea farmer: to protect his newly discovered, delicious tea plant from theft by neighbors, he simply claimed that the tea grew in soil enriched with yellow duck manure and tasted like it, too.

The flavor profile of this oolong is deep, multi-layered, and strongly shaped by its origin. At the forefront is a striking, stony minerality, a direct result of the region's weathered volcanic granite soil. This rocky base is accompanied by a subtle, creamy sweetness, bringing nuances of almond milk and ripe peaches. Through traditional artisanal charcoal roasting, the tea also gains a noble, slightly woody depth and a fine tartness reminiscent of grapefruit zest, which leads into a very long-lasting, pleasantly dry aftertaste.

What makes Duck Shit Dancong so special is the traditional single-tree concept. The word Dancong translates to single bush, as the leaves were originally harvested from separate, often centuries-old tea trees. The oolong unfolds its full complexity when prepared in the traditional Gongfu style (with many short infusions). While the roasted and fruity notes resonate in the first rounds, the mineral, clear character of the mountain emerges ever more purely and refreshingly as the session continues.

Why did we add this to our shop?

During our travels through China, we kept falling in love with the incredibly aromatic smashed lemon teas that you can find on almost every corner there. While searching for the secret behind this intense flavor, we kept coming across the same tea: Duck Shit Dancong.

Since then, it has been one of our absolute favorites. Its extraordinary combination of minerality, fruitiness, and depth makes it a unique experience both on its own and as a base for modern tea drinks.
